"The reason Ms. Qualls is a millionaire now is because she was smart enough to put advertisements on her website when most people her age wouldn’t have even thought of that."

Actually, as I understand it, she was forced to. Her account with a hosting compzany alloted her only so much bandwith and all the visits she was getting combined with all the layouts she was creating and uploading was eating that up. She couldnt afford more, so a hosting company rep advised her to put a google adsense ad on her page. She did, and all that traffic was automatically turned into dollars, much to her shock.

"If you aren’t on the front line, you at least have to be on one of the first 10 lines. If you create a website because you heard on 60 Minutes that someone made 40 million dollars with a website, you are probably years too late."

Soooo true. That's exactly what I thought when I heard of Ashley's website and her success with it. So I didnt bother going through the time and trouble of creating my own website that gives away background layouts. And I see lots of people wanting to make that very mistake.

Like you said before, sometimes the stars just have to align in your favor in order to get a website to be a huge hit. Things you cannot control like market demand, the maturity of the internet, and your own age played a big factor in Whateverlife. I guess luck and skill are balanced 50/50, at least for your first site to be popular. If you create another popular website, then your factors tip more in favor to your skill and leveraging the popularity of your previous website.

<em>ccRicers's last blog post..<a href='http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ZeroDominance/~3/290311271/' rel="nofollow">Going to make some changes</a></em>

Hey Scott, I follow you on Twitter too (I think I am 1 of your 12,000 you added as some point). Adsense is naff, I make no money at all. I use unruly media too and made about $50 off them in 2 months but that's because they used to pay $5-$10 dollars for the first hit on each new ad campaign, but that's all stopped and so now I make pennies. It's quite entertaining though so I might keep them on there for a while.

For me though it's about getting much more traffic to my blog and getting my name known out there in the blogging world, but with so many of them it's difficult to break through!

I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions on my blog and any tips you can give me to drive traffic to it would be fab!

see you Twitter :-)

@Greg yeah I agree. I don't make much on AdSense either. Most of my revenue on my other sites comes from direct advertiser revenue. But I use adsense on a few blogs just because I don't really want them full monetized, but if they make a few pennies a day, great.

There are always new and better money making techniques out there. Finding the ones that work for you is the key. AdSense worked great for Ashely because of her target market, the time she started, and the ease of AdSense.

Hi scott, I just saw this on twitter and decided to have a read. I personally don't like adsense. I think if you went with a CPM ad service. I currently use http://www.contextweb.com/ I've made almost $5 with my newborn blog in just under 2 full weeks. With only 3,000 Ad impressions.

I think a lot of new bloggers / websites should look towards CPM ads instead of googles adsense CPC ads.
